ABOUT the ARTIST

Richard Drehmer grew up in Corning, NY in a musical and artistic family.  Self-taught, he recently retired after forty-some years in the pastoral ministry, mostly in the Washington, DC area.  While he and Mrs. Drehmer are very active in their local church, Mr. Drehmer is now able to pursue more vigorously his love of painting.  He shows in several states and sells his original oil paintings and prints of his work.

Mr. Drehmer paints mostly plein air, that is, outdoors, directly from nature.  His paintings are in the realist/impressionist tradition, and are noted for their bold treatment of light and color.  He is an adjudicated member of several artist groups, and has demonstrated his oil painting techniques for a number of art associations.  Mr. Drehmer has done many one-man and small group shows.  His work has been honored with numerous awards.

Richard has a clear philosophy for his art.  He paints for the sheer joy of it, and wants those who see his paintings to above all experience that joy.  As one might expect, the painting experience for him is an act of worship of the Great Artist who made light and color, and gave us eyes to see and spirits to appreciate.

Richard believes strongly in the interrelationship of the arts and has been involved in them in a variety of ways.  He has a degree in both vocal and instrumental music, and has conducted and performed in a wide variety of music traditions including classical, operatic and folk music.  Acting and directing have been an important part of Richard’s ministry.  He has written and directed a yearly performance of the Passion Play and done several biblical monologues.

Dick’s wife June shares his interests.  She has a master’s degree in music education, and is an accomplished pianist and organist.  The Drehmers are campers, having painted and traveled extensively throughout the United States and England.
